How Creating A Home You Love Is A Ritual For The Winter Solstice

Today, 12/21/22 marks the start of Winter aka the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year (at least in the northern hemisphere that is) so I wanted to discuss how our home ties into that.

I find it amazing how much we are connected to nature, and I have never been the one to resonate with the Western new year of January 1st. For me, my New Year is the Spring Equinox, March 21st. It's when I start to kind of come out of my cocoon and start feeling alive and start wanting to take action on things I've been thinking about doing during the Winter season.

For me, Winter has always been a season of rest, a season of recuperation, rejuvenation, hibernation, very much like a bear, right? So because of that, because we are now in this season of inward, we're spending more time at home.

So let’s focus on what that means.

How are we creating a home that is supporting us during this season of rest, this season of rejuvenation, this season of stillness, the season of reflection?

When we are in stillness, we have time and space to reflect. We think about the new things that you want to do in life, the goals that you want to set for ourselves and action steps to get them accomplished.

Your home should be supporting you during the Winter Solstice, the season of hibernation, during that season of reflection, during that season of stillness.

How To Know If Your Home Is Supporting You During The Winter Solstice

If you answered yes to these questions:

  • Is your home in a state where it can support you in that season of rest?

  • Is it providing you with comfort?

  • Is the furniture in your home providing you with comfort so that you can rest and be at ease and you can be still and not feel like your home cannot support you and not feel like you don't have the items in your home to make it feel like a home?

Let’s take a real life example: If the way that you rest and recharge is by Netflix and Chill then do you have the things in your room to help support you in that state where you feel most relaxed?

That means:

  • Do you have comfortable furniture?

  • Do you have a cozy blanket?

  • Do you have comfortable throw pillows?

  • Do you have a side table to place your hot tea or coffee or drink at?

  • Do you have coasters?

  • Do you have a coffee table?

  • Do you have a place to put your feet up?

  • Is your TV up to standards?

  • Do you have the right lighting where you can watch TV in ease, where it's not uncomfortable to sit and actually enjoy a movie or binge watch your favorite show?

  • Do you have a cozy rug that you could put your feet on when you, you know, when you get up from your sofa to go to the kitchen and grab a snack?

  • Is your home free of clutter and everything has a home so that can you find things easily?

Little things like these that are not so little are what make a huge difference in having a home that embraces and support us.

Is your home prepared to support you during this time of rest and rejuvenation as known as Winter, as known as the the Winter Solstice right? Which is naturally supposed to be the season where we go inward with reflect. When we really sit still and figure out what our next moves are going to be once Spring hits aka the Spring Equinox.

We're going inward, like literally inward, to reflect in our bodies, in our mind, and our soul, but we're also literally physically going inward into our homes because it's getting colder. You don't want to spend as much time outside. None of us do.

We want to be home resting and we want to be warm and comfortable while doing so.

How To Know If Your Home Is Supporting You During The Winter Solstice

Ask yourself these questions:

  • So is your furniture comfortable?

  • Is it positioned in a way in your home where it makes sense and it provides you with ease so you could flow throughout your space?

  • Do have the right pieces of furniture in your home to give you that sense of stillness and reflection and rest that we're all craving during this wintertime. So the colors in your home provide you with just this feeling of goodness and all the good feels?

Because we can't rest if we don't feel good. We can't rest, be at ease, be still, reflect to all those things if our environment is not up to par, if our environment doesn't provide that sense of calmness where we can rest and let loose and let go and then be still and then reflect and then figure out what it is that we're going to do once the next change in season comes and it's time to move forward.

How To Know If Your Home Is Supporting You During The Winter Solstice

  • So do we have cozy blankets to watch TV?

  • Do we have comfortable sheets in our bed to support us, to give us a beautiful 8 hours of sleep where we could achieve that REM cycle?

  • Do we have the adequate lighting in our spaces to where we could actually see and perform the tasks that we want to perform in our home, whether it's in our office, whether we're working from home, whether we're trying to read a book, whether we're having game night with the family?

Lighting is also important colors are also important.

Textures are also important to the experience that we're trying to create when we're home, when we're resting, when we're rejuvenating, when we're really recalibrating ourselves and going inward to reflect. So is our home in a state where it can do that for us, where it can support us in that state of stillness and reflection and rejuvenation? When we're home, when we're going inward, when we're in our private sanctuary and really like doing the work that we need to do to get ready for the upcoming months.

Because a lot of us are feeling very low energy. And it makes sense because Winter, the Winter Solstice is a season of slowing down. Winter is a season of rest.

It's like, think of the bears, right? They gather all their food. They gather whatever they need to make it through the winter so that when Spring comes, it's like they're reborn, right? It's like they're out into nature. And nature has gone through a cycle of, like, a death and then a rebirth, right? So it's a very similar experience because we are part of nature. And so it makes sense why we're feeling a lot of us are feeling that calling to just be still and to not do much, to just kind of let go and surrender.

It's going to be really hard to rest and hibernate during Winter aka the Winter Solstice if your space is in disarray, if your space is cluttered, if your space is, filled with items and colors that you do not love. It's going to be hella hard to rest in a space that just does not make you feel amazing.

A lot of people think of the holidays when they think of Winter, but the holidays is a time to bond with family and friends and to be in community.

Your home should be set up for you to be in community with people, to be in community with yourself. Your home deserves all of the attention so that it can then provide you with ease so that you can be still and rest in your home. In order to recalibrate. In order to rejuvenate.

Pour into your space so that then your space can pour into you because home decor is an act of self love.

This Is What Happens When Your Home Is Supporting You During The Winter Solstice:

You pour into your space and give it the attention that it needs. You nurture your space as you should, as we all should, and in return, our space nurtures us. It provides us with comfort, it provides us with ease. It provides us with the ability to rest comfortably. It provides us with peace of mind. It provides us with joy. We actually look forward to being home. We want to spend time in our homes and then that improves our wellness, that improves our mental health.

So now all of a sudden you feel motivated to take action on whatever you need to take action. All of a sudden now you want to invite people over to your home because it's something that you're proud of and you want to invite your loved ones into your sacred space.

All of a sudden now, bonding as a family comes easier because a space is open enough to receive that and your space is set up in a way where it can allow for that to happen freely and easily.

Spending time in your space, your sanctuary should be a beautiful and rewarding experience!
