Dark rooms can feel cozy, but if done wrong, they can feel down right depressing and no one wants to feel depressed.
No worries, I’ve got your back with tips on how to brighten up a dark room and let all of that light in for a bright and energizing space.
How To Brighten Up A Dark Room: Curtains
Curtains are meant to dress up your windows and in some instances, block out the light (hello black out curtains), but for this post, we’re trying to brighten up your room.
With that said, make sure the ends of your curtain rods are hung about 10 inches from the sides of your window frame. This will allow you to open up your curtains enough that they frame your window and let as much light into your room.

How To Brighten Up A Dark Room: Mirrors
Mirrors not only brighten up a room but they make it feel bigger too since they bounce light throughout a room.
If you have a small and dark room, then you’re knocking two problems out of the way by using mirrors in your room.
How To Brighten Up A Dark Room: Paint
You can go with white, but white paint is not a must in order to brighten up a room. If you’re into color, like I am, then try a lighter shade of paint of your favorite color.
It will instantly make your room feel brighter, but before you get to painting, check out this post full of tips on how to avoid a hot mess of a paint job.
How To Brighten Up A Dark Room: Reduce Clutter
Yes, the clutter word again.
Clutter takes up space and the more you have of it in a dark room, the darker and depressing it will feel. Take even a few minutes a day to declutter your dark room and I’m telling you’ll feel a huge difference.
How To Brighten Up A Dark Room: Open Shelving
The thing about open shelving is that it doesn’t take up a lot of visual space like an entertainment center or bookcase since the walls are still visible.
This little trick allows you to have storage without your room feeling dark and gloomy since the open shelving doesn’t block the light from entering your room.
