There always comes a time where you’ll be faced with (if you haven’t already) the dilemma of having to buy your first sofa so it’s a good idea to learn how to choose the right sofa for your room.
It can be a scary experience if you don’t know what you’re doing or if you don’t come armed with some useful tips tucked into your bag of decorating tricks.
I feel you.
I mean it’s a big purchase and with all big purchases should come lots of planning and thought. Lots.
Shit, I’m sure you don’t want to mess this up and end up having to deal with all of the hassle that comes along with having to return a big piece of furniture.
Gosh! Just the thought of having to call customer service, arranging the pick up, making sure someone is home to greet the furniture store guys so they can get the sofa, then working out a second delivery, making sure someone is home to greet the delivery guys and so goes that cycle of madness….makes me want to curl up in a corner and cry like a little bitch!
It’s just too much.
To avoid all off that drama (and crying might I add) take a close read to what I’m about to share with you because I really don’t want you to have that type of experience.
That’s why I’m here, to hit you up with some knowledge on how to choose the right sofa for your room.
Let’s get to it then.
How To Choose The Right Sofa For Your Room: Don’t Go Cheap
Trust me on this.
I haven’t steered you wrong since we started hanging out here on my site and I never will, that’s why with this and any big purchases (no matter the type), never go cheap. It’s always best to invest in a good quality sofa then to get one at Ikea and go through the whole “how to choose the right sofa for your room” experience again. So not worth it.
If you’re tight on cash, I say take some more time to save up a little more cash or get savvy and search Google for some coupons. Now Google is my go to money saver.
Hop on to Google and just enter the name of the store where you’re looking to buy your sofa, add the word “coupon with the current month and year” right after. (for example, say macy’s is where you want to get your sofa from. Type into the Google search bar, macys coupon august 2016).
You’d be surprised on how much you could save…10%, 15%, it adds up let me tell you.
You can also hop onto the store’s website to subscribe to their email list. That way you’ll get first dibs on sales and coupons (some will even send you a coupon as a thank you just for joining their list….nice right? I think so).
How To Choose The Right Sofa For Your Room: Choose The Right Material
If you have kids or pets, this is crucial. I mean even if you’re just looking for a sofa that can handle the abuse of everyday use, you’ll want to consider the type of fabric you choose for your sofa. Don’t get yourself a velvet sofa if you know damn well your kids ignore your “no eating or drinking on the sofa” rule.
My advice, don’t do it to yourself.
While you’re planning, buy yourself some extra warranty if you can afford it. That way if there’s some sort of accident that happens on your sofa like, let’s say someone gets a bit too tipsy with the wine and spills it on your new baby, velvet sofa that is, you’re covered and can have it fixed easily and for free (or a small deductible compared to having to shell out some more dough on a replacement sofa).
The extra $200 or so for some warranty seems worth it to me.
How To Choose The Right Sofa For Your Room: Pick a Style That Matches You
This is where a lot of people go wrong, well at least those that get distracted or swayed by a good sale or by the latest decorating craze.
Stay strong and stick with what you like and matches your style and personality.
Do you like clean lines and simple design? Then go with a mid-century style sofa or maybe curves and detail are what you’re into, then go with a vintage style sofa.

How To Choose The Right Sofa For Your Room: Color or Not?
Piggy backing off my “choose the right material” tip from earlier, decide what color will best suit you and your room.
I always say that it’s best to go with a neutral color for your furniture and bring in color with accessories (not to mention more affordable). Accessories are way cheaper to change up than furniture since furniture is way more expensive to replace.
Not to mention, there’s usually an extra charge if you want to select a different color for your sofa that’s not a neutral color. Just a little tip for you.
Don’t like boring beige (don’t blame you)? Go with a medium to dark grey color instead. It matches with all colors and can hide dirt pretty good if you’re stubborn and skimp on the warranty like I suggested earlier.
I’m stubborn too, so have no shame.
If you are one that doesn’t have decor ADD and likes to stick with things for awhile, then to you, I say, go bold with color.
How To Choose The Right Sofa For Your Room: Delivery or Store Pick Up
If you’re super tight on money, then store pick up is something you may want to strongly consider.
Especially since delivery may not always be free, but also think about the hassle that it will take to tie up a sofa to the roof of your car and then hauling up to your place (if you have to deal with stairs, then I really feel sorry for you).
If you’re cool with all of this, then go with store pick up, but if you’d rather pay extra for someone else to deal with the headache, then delivery is for you (don’t forget the tip).
So there you have it!
