Avoid a Disaster: How To Choose The Right Chandelier
It may seem easy. You go into a store or hop on a website and just buy a chandelier, any chandelier that catches your eye because at the end of the day, does it really matter if you know how to choose the right chandelier? Is it really that serious?Of course it does and of course it is!Think about it. Do you want to end up with a chandelier that is too big, too small, too sparkly, too masculine, too whatever for your room? Do you?The possibilities of the fuck ups that could happen are endless and let me tell you from mucho experencia (translation: much experience) that it ain't easy to mount a chandelier (and unmount it because you realized after it's hanging from the ceiling, that it just wasn't "the one") so if I were you, I'd listen carefully to these tips that I'm about to share with you on how to choose the right chandelier for your room.Let's get to it then....
How To Choose The Right Chandelier: Will You Bump Into It?
Checking out a chandelier at the store is totally different.Have you ever noticed how high the ceilings are at home decor stores? That's not a coincidence. They're high so that it will allow for them to display different sized chandeliers (tall and short). The difference here is that your ceiling is most likely not as tall, which if you're catching on, means that not all chandeliers will fit in your room. For instance when I bought our chandelier, I made sure to keep in mind that my hubs is 5 feet 10 inches tall and that our living room ceiling is 8 feet tall, so I ignored any chandeliers taller than 2 feet. Why? Because I wanted to make sure that he could walk under it (besides the people I know are usually no taller than my hubs anyway). The 2 feet allowed for the height of the chandelier and the mounting cable. So when picking out your chandelier, keep the height of your ceiling and the height of your peeps in mind unless you don't mind them bumping into your chandelier.
How To Choose The Right Chandelier: Size It Up
Even if you plan on placing a coffee table, bed or dinning room table under your chandelier and the "will you bump into it" tip doesn't apply, you still want to make sure that your chandelier is the right size for your room. The last thing that you want is a big-ass-over-the-top or way-too-small chandelier for your regular sized room. The way to avoid this disaster, is simply to measure. Measure your room and pay attention to the dimensions of the chandelier (online pics can easily play tricks on you so don't get cat fished).I know, I know, I can hear you now, "but Julie, measuring is sooo time consuming". I get it, but I'm also here to tell you that measuring will save you from some serious aggravation. For instance if your room size is 100 square feet, then a chandelier that is 10 inches in diameter, would be way too small for your room (it would get swallowed up).So get it right the first time and measure!
How To Choose The Right Chandelier: Will It Fit In?
Figure out what you like, what you don't like and also what will fit in with the rest of the decor in your place. You don't want to end up buying a vintage looking chandelier when the style of your room is all sleek and modern looking. It just won't jell together so don't do it.
How To Choose The Right Chandelier: Right Lighting
Now that you have all of these tips checked off, the last piece to keep in mind is to make sure that your chandelier will give you the right amount of lighting in your room.Chandeliers are usually the main source of lighting for a room so they should be the brightest source of light. Of course you should always mix things up with maybe a floor lamp or table lamp (depending on the size of your room). Not sure how much lighting your room needs? Check out these tips here.
There you have it!
